A former educator-turned-strategist and mom, Liza joined the Beacon hive in June 2019.
education and community-focused organizer, recruitment and equity strategist and a mom.
I’m passionate about…
supporting organizations and teams through best and equitable practices to cultivate strong outcomes.
Briefly describe your work.
Strategic Community Partners is a national organization that works with mission-driven organizations rooted in education, equity, and justice. We help organizations build capacity by pairing strategy with community and cultural context to drive forward powerful missions.
I lead our powerful all-female program and partnerships team in Detroit, Washington D.C. and St. Louis.
What do you love about what you do?
As a former educator and a mom, I love that I get to wake up knowing that I have a direct impact on how a child in a classroom is served. From influencing policy to supporting school systems to recruiting and retaining dedicated teachers, I feel connected to the work.
How did you start (your work)?
I started as an eighth grade classroom teacher in rural North Carolina. My experience as an educator and my classrooms of kids are what ground me every day. It is Tikiarah, Javeyona, Kendrell, Eliza (and now my own girls) that set me on fire every day.
Where do you see your work going in the next year… five?
As a result of our work over the past four years, we have had the opportunity to learn and grow with and alongside our partners. To achieve our vision over the next three years (and beyond), we will continue to pair strategy with community and cultural context.
What do you like best about BEAHIVE?
The energy. It is always bright. I appreciate the productive energy (some might call it a buzz…).
This space has also introduced me to incredible and powerful entrepreneurs that have been thought partners and provided synergy to my day-to-day work.
What’s your favorite thing about the local community?
Beacon really has it all. I mostly care about the food — there’s great food. Great beer, too.
