THE CONUNDRUM
You’re full of spirit and smarts but don’t know where to apply it. You have a great idea for a venture that will change the world (or maybe just our community) but don’t know how to implement it. You long to work in a dynamic environment full of like minds, enthusiasm and creativity.
THE FIX
BEAHIVE internship. Inspired in part by the coworking movement, BEAHIVE is a new kind of collaborative space for work and community, the only of its kind in the Hudson Valley. At the most basic level, we provide a shared, creative work environment for entrepreneurs, the creative class, microbusinesses and consultants.
More than that, though, we’re a rich community of members from diverse backgrounds with a range of talents and a desire to improve our professional lives, our personal lives and our community.
We’re driven by the dream of vibrant, diverse and inclusive Hudson Valley communities — supported by a Main Street economy that is sustainable, locally rooted and human scale. See our vision of the positive impact we can have.
ABOUT THE INTERNSHIP
With multiple hives and a plethora of programs and projects in mind, we have an ongoing need for folks to help realize our larger vision. Engage with smart, creative professionals and learn firsthand how to build a social enterprise and an engaged community and bask in the warmth of collaboration.
We have big plans — to grow our community and our impact. You could help.
You’ll get:
- A free full-time membership to BEAHIVE. Help us and work on your own projects.
- A growing network of mentors. BEAHIVE members work in a variety of fields, from web programming and graphic design to finance, art and public relations; writers, editors and solopreneurs of every stripe.
- A breadth of experience not found in a conventional workplace — limited only by your initiative.
Some things you could help with:
- Event planning, promotion and logistics
- General administration and management of the spaces
- Community building
- Promoting BEAHIVE regionally
- Researching grant and sponsorship opportunities
- Supporting BEAHIVE projects
- Collaborating on member projects, which might include:
- PR, publicity and marketing
- writing and editing
- design
- social media
You’ll work directly with BEAHIVE founder Scott Tillitt, occasionally with our partners, and potentially with members.
It’s unpaid (to start) but could lead to paid work — especially on projects with our members. Time commitment: flexible.

PAST INTERNS
Brendan Cunningham
Brendan moved to Beacon from Washington, DC, with a change of career in mind. He is a 2004 graduate of Washington College in Chestertown, MD, where he majored in art history. He has a background in marketing, but recently entered the field of grant-writing and membership development.
Rick Feltington
Rick came to us because of his interest in “creating spaces and events that enhance collaborative potential, build community, and promote deep communication and healthy relationships.” Hey, that’s us! He fancies himself a writer, teacher/facilitator, performer, video producer, videographer and editor and studied communications at Boston University and attended graduate school in Communication Arts at NYIT.
He also has a background in youth work and a growing interest in local currency and reforming our money system.
Nate Garcia
Nate came to us during the fall semester of 2010 as an intern through the arts management program at SUNY Purchase. Nate has a passion for visual arts and the environment and a self-taught background in graphic design — meaning he fit right in. He worked for several years for the Fresh Air Fund Sharpe Reservation as an environmental educator, teams course instructor and warehouse manager, and recently stumbled across The New York State Outdoor Education Association, where he joined several committees as a graphic designer for many of their publications and advertising.
Kaleigh Griffin
Kaleigh is a senior at SUNY New Paltz, double majoring in English and media production with minors in creative writing and journalism. She’s an aspiring writer, enthusiastic event planner and avid blogger.
Kaleigh believes BEAHIVE is a creative, fresh idea and hopes to help inspire collaboration and progress in her hometown of Kingston.
Chelsea Mozen
Chelsea was with us for several productive months starting in December ’09. Among other things, she was (and still is) director of programs (and co-founder) of Just Foreign Policy, an advocacy NGO. She has directed campaigns against the IMF and the World Bank and has an MA in Economics from the New School.
